Google “I hate Study Island” and you get thousands of results. Find out why.    Image: own photo

Overview:
Study Island is an online site designed to help K-12 students master common core concepts and help improve standardized test scores. Unfortunately, the site is plagued by pedagogical and motivation design issues and its gaming mode is a perfect example of why edutainment gets such a bad rap. My written evaluation outlines the problems. And proposes solutions.

Work description:
In-depth problem analysis based on interviews and first-hand user testing, leading to report creation and instructional (re-)design based recommendations. I also created a Scratch based educational video game (Prime Feeding Time) as an example of a more appropriate use of gaming.

Learner target:
School administrators and Study Island management
